One day Seminar on Study of Geography: Scope and Problems

Being a pioneer institution of the Malwa belt, Baba Farid Group of Institutions has always aimed at providing advanced and quality education to its students. Keeping this goal in mind, the institute is all see to start new courses like M.Sc. Geography, M.A. History, M.A. Political Science, B.Lib and B.Sc (C.S.M) from this session onwards. In view of this, issues related to the scope and effective teaching of the above mentioned courses were disowned in a one day seminar organized by Baba Farid College. In this seminar, experts from varied universities of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh participated and talked in detail about many aspects related particularly to the teaching of Geography subject: Speaking at the very onset of the discussions the associate director of Baba Farid College, Dr. Pardeep Kaura welcomed all the guests and gave a brief introduction about the history of the institute. He also mentioned about the social, academic and intellectual happenings in the institute. Presiding over the first session of the seminar, professor .S. Mangat, former Head, Department of Geography, Punjabi University Patiala said that it is an honour that Baba Farid has endeavored to start post graduation of the subject Geography which is widely neglected. Congratulating the Managing Director, Mr. Gurmeet Singh Dhaliwal, he wished that the post graduate Department of Geography would provide its students latest technical aids to the students to touch horizons of success. He added that as the things around us are changing, therefore it is a dire necessity to change the syllabi according Prof. Mangat said would certainly be possible when Baba Farid Group changes into a university. Prof. Shubh Prem Brar, Rajindra College Bathinda said that initially running the course of M.Sc. Geography would not be economically fruitful but any it would really encourage and provide a golden opportunity for the students who wish to carry out their higher research in Geography. He added that the assistance of the advanced agricultural and engineering labs of the institute would practically help the students.
He also added that in the current times, Geogrphy is really a happening discipline and its study is really a must for the students. Prof. Jaspal Singh, Govt. College, Ropar suggested that along with practical education, students should directly be linseed to field survey so that they understand minute details associated with the subject Prof. Kulwant Singh, Principal Govt. College Fazilka should also bring in courses like remote sensing, G.I.S.S., Town planning and advanced agricultural courses. Dr. Pawan Garg, Principal, Govt. College, Dabwali, appreciated the skill oriented teaching imported to the students of BFGI and said that students perusing M.Sc. Geography would certainly find avenges of employment soon after they finish their course. Dr. Asha Garg, Principal Maharana Pratap College, Dabwali said that the facilities of Wi-Fi and ERP would enable the students to grow and find better options of employment in places outside Punjab as well. Dr. Shivjeet Kaur, Guru Kashi College, Talwandi Sabo & Prof. Harbans Singh Padam , S.B.S. Govt. College ,Kotkapura stresses on the better availability of equipments such as library books, journals, e-journals and laboratories to the students of BFGI. Dr. Jaspal Singh wariach, Head Department of Geography, S.B.S. Govt. College Kotkapura said that, to make the tracing sites of Geography we should use technological equipments like computer etc so that the data can be stored for a longer period of tie safely. Prof Parminder Singh, Govt. Barjindra College, Faridkot and Prof. Raj Kumar, Govt. College Muktsar suggested that deserving and meritorious students should be given special scholarships for seeking admission in M.Sc. Geography so that our talent remains intact. Prof. Jagdish Kaur and Prof. Des Raj of Govt. College Bathinda and Fazilka respectively felt ensured that the projectors installed in every classroom facilitate computer equipped PPT teaching methodology. Prof. R.C. Shrivastva, Govt. College, Ganganagar said that for students conferences and guest lecturers hold a very important place and so the department of geography should ensure such activities at regular intervals.
Delivering the vote of thanks Prof. Jaspal Singh paid gratitude to all the experts for effectively utilizing the platform provided by Baba Farid Group of Institutions. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the Managing Director of the institution, Mr. Gurmeet Singh Dhaliwal has designed the campus in such a format that every facility for the students is available here He also said for M.Sc. Geography labs of International standards would be constructed. He congratulated Prof. Dilshad Ali, Department of Geography of Baba Farid College, Principal of Baba Farid College, Vice-Principal and Heads of different departments were also present in the seminar.
